Just moments when you want to do something that’s right and it back fires on you. Those moments suck big time.
Take for example the time my sister and I rode a cab and the person who was on it before us accidentally left their mobile phone (would you deliberately leave your phone?). Wanting to do the right thing and because, if I lost my phone I would very much like someone to return it and despite the time and age where returning something isn’t the fad, I would like to say I’m one of those people who refuses to conform for the sake of conformity.
Anyway, the owner of the phone called and we found out that he was the Korean kid that got off the taxi.
So yeah, we asked the taxi driver to drive us back where we got on his taxi and we’ll just add another flag down on our fare.
The kid’s mom insisted that we accept a hundred peso bill as payment for the taxi despite our protest that it was okay and we didn’t mind making the effort to return the phone.
The lady was strange; really. She tossed the bill at us and then closed the taxi door. Who does that these days?
So yeah, also thinking that it might be insulting if we don’t accept it since we weren’t too keen on their culture and outlook regarding rewards and good will and all that stuff, so yeah, we asked the cab driver that we could head to Ayala now that the deed was done.
My sister and I decided that we could give the 100 peso bill to the driver, anyway it was his way of living and maybe he hasn’t earned much for the day and all that. (Martyr syndrome – we were idiots).
Here's simple arithmetic: The entire flag fare we had was around 90, then adding the additional flag down rate of 30 pesos, our entire fare was 120, right? Then add the 100 peso bill, it should be 220, yes? Anyway, my sister and I didn’t have any change. We gave the guy 250, meaning we were expecting 30 pesos for our change.
The dude wouldn’t give us our change and when we tried explaining that we gave him more than we were supposed to pay and adding the fact that there were 200 peso bills it should have been bloody obvious…but no, he made out that we actually gave him the exact amount. SHIT! I told him that we gave him more than the actual fare and the added flag rate and he could count to verify – He wouldn’t bloody count it in front of us and kept telling us we gave him the exact amount. BS really.
So what did we do? I asked for the darn change and left the 100 peso bill from the Korean woman with the driver.
Did we get a "Thank you"? Hell No.
That's gratitude for you.
(Remember litany from grannies about respect and all that is no longer alive these days? The old dude must have started it on his generation. No wonder we no longer have it per se.)
The lesson of the day? Fuck being nice or being extra nice for that matter. We don’t regret returning the phone but with the driver? *sigh* we should have just taken the money and deposited it on one of those charity boxes at KFC or something. Yeah?
It was a moment of weakness. I thought I’d try out being human for a day. Right. No wonder I’m sarcastic by nature. People like that? Makes you regret being nice.
So Word of the day? Realist.
